Thank, you! This is invaluable reference material! If this subject interests you, there's a group of us members of the city's Government Policy Action Group that are meeting to find a policy template to recommend to the mayor. We need more citizen...

I should have guessed, Lana. You're right, of course. I could write a protest letter to join the voices of those who have made the same points already, but I guess until there are enough people wanting badly enough to address this issue in Chattanooga the city will have little motivation to hear. (Aarrrgh . . . it's enough to make a person want to move to an island . . . an uninhabited one . . . ). Thanks for your response.

Just noticed a thing your profile where you noted that you'd like to see this group involved with others beyond the local level.

We are part of a national network and are in communication with (for inspiration, encouragement, networking and planning) many other groups across the country. The goal with Transition is that each cluster grows and spreads to connect with all the others. It begins with a community somewhere (as it did in Totnes), then two, then three... then a whole city... then a whole state. And as these clusters -- neighborhoods, communities, cities and states -- successfully Transition and build resilience, they end up a connected web not just online but geographically. The ripple effect -- it all spreads until it's all one new country, new world, new planet!

As more groups in our region successfully transition, the resilience spreads and yes, it will be so much more than local! It will be so cool when it all coalesces.

As soon as I find out how many spots are left- this next one is fairly full. They are also very specific; the general info is relevant to now, but, much of the info is specific to the middle ages- after all they were experts in self-sufficiency :)
the gardening/ animal husbandry class in May might be more appropriate as long as people remember that this is not a transition-oriented class the group asking for it and arranging it is a medievil re-enactment group so that is the light it will be cast in, however the subjects (and much of the genral info) are relevant for today.
If later people want a transition oriented class we can do that- or at least how to get started in some of the backyard culitvation things- remember no new farms to be started in Hamilton County- no problem- we are not experts by any means (more like experienced novices!) and I am one that does not believe there are any experts as that implies ou know everything there is in a given area and that belief I've noticed tends to shut one down to learning more...... we can talk at the meeting if there is something specific we can help with- we play with others well :)

I agree, Lana, we do need to do something great.
P.S. Today, I drove by the 5ft. forest and noticed it no longer exists.

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I run a Facebook group called Sustainable Chattanooga at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=40783738010 that promotes sustainable gardening, landscaping, construction and lifestyles.

We're also on MySpace: http://groups.myspace.com/masterkudzugardeners.

Please join us and the green community in doing the most good for the planet, ourselves and generations to come!
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I would like to see native habitat rebuilding and permaculture become celebrated gardening and landscaping techniques, not considered fringe, and weird.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
Hopefully my group can be instrumental in promoting green living

Suggestions you have for improving our Registration questions. Getting to know you better.
It would make sense if members could befriend Transition folks in states other than our own, especially if this Transition is to call itself more than local. And especially since so much of a state borders other states.

Do the most good (a Sustainable Chattanooga series): Make your own household cleaners

Below are links to recipes, including general cleaners, window cleaners and degreasers.
I have not compared all the recipes from these links. I got mine from various magazines and online sources, but would love hear any reviews and comparisons. I’m currently trying the recipes from the book, "Clean House, Clean Planet."

Help Stop Monsanto's Threats to Food Safety

Monsanto is trying to push through bills in Congress that threaten our organic food sources. Contact our leaders (using the link below), and let them know we believe in organic, sustainable, and highly diverse food sources.
We are not interested in letting Monsanto sue small farmers out of existence, or using their influence to force farmers to use their genetically modified seeds and pesticides:
