- Technically the State had responsibility for clean-up under CECLRA. The site was a superfund but has since been delisted. The second phase of clean up began in 2005 and ended in 2007. Sediments were contaminated by the Southern Wood Piedmont site. These sediments were removed. Initially they were used to produce fuel but proved not to have enough energy and the rest were landfilled.
Phase 2 of the remediation process installed a impermeable clay layer under the surface. this clay layer prevents contamination elements in the ground water and surrounding soils to reenter the creek.
Southern Peidmonts site is currently being monitored by RCRA.
Essentially the creek is in a biological remediation phase where nature is running its course on the creek. The bacteria and other biodiversity that are necessary for a healthy system are returning. The gears are being put back in motion.
Concerning the current levels of creek contamination. This will take a call to the state to find out. I do know that the Trust for Public Land did a study to asses if the levels were unhealthy for recreation in the area. Polynuclear aromatic hydocarbon were found at levels between 10-100 ppm. Generally an urban area has levels around 2 ppm. This seems high but apparently not high enough to be considered a health risk.
At this point the biggest threat is from ecoli and agricultural runoff from up stream.
I do now know if there is a community group that goes out there to clean up the trash that is in the creek. Nor do I know if it is safe or unsafe to do so. I'll see if I can find info from the state about that.

Can it Be Done?
I work at the Bethlehem Center and we have a lot of space and constant volunteers. I want to help the children have a cleaner home, but until then I want to teach them to take care of what they have. Any ideas to help change the polluted Alton Park into a place where food & children can grow?
